What if while driving to the grocery store, you are rear ended by a person who does not have any insurance on their car. You suffer painful injuries including a broken arm and miss two months of work.

Unless this person has substantial assets, which is unlikely since they didn’t have insurance on their vehicle, your only recourse may be to claim under the uninsured motorist portion of your own coverage.  Uninsured motorist insurance provides money for bodily injury damages caused by negligent drivers who either do not have any, or who do not have enough, liability insurance.  For instance, if you are injured by a negligent driver who has no liability insurance, your uninsured motorist coverage pays for your medical expenses, lost income, and pain and suffering.  If the negligent driver has only a small amount of liability insurance which will not cover your damages, your uninsured motorist policy pays for your damages over and above the limits of the negligent driver's insurance.  However, unless you have uninsured motorist coverage, you may be left with no income for the two months of missed work and have to pay for your own medical bills.  We see injured people on a daily basis who could have collected substantial amounts of money for their losses, but were left with little or no recovery because they had rejected this coverage.  This type of coverage is usually very affordable and readily available if you ask for it.  Consider adding this coverage if you do not already have it.
